We interviewed Michael, one of our tutors at Aced, he is doing EEE at UCL and has done the Imperial EEE interview in 2026, we are pleased that he is willing to share his first hand experience of the interview with us.Â

When should applicants start preparing their EEE interview?
They only gave me 5 days notice of the EEE interview, which was not enough in my opinion. Therefore, applicants should start preparing interviews much earlier before the invitation came, preferably right after finishing ESAT.

What topic were you asked in the interview?Â
Personal Statement questions, experimental reasoning, probability and mathematical skills. Personal Statement questions took up a significant part of the interview.

Did they mention any personal statement questions?
Yes! Be sure to know all the details of your P.S. very well. You should be able to explain anything you have mentioned and discuss why you found it interesting. I suggest using AI to quiz you on your personal statement (it can be useful for identifying areas you haven't thought about in much depth).

How many interviewers did you have and how long did it last?
1 interviewer, approximately 25 minutes of interview.

How do you think applicants should prepare their EEE interviews?
Don't spend all the time learning about obscure maths or highly advanced maths. I practiced lots of graph sketching, which wasn't especially relevant to my particular interview. Instead, make sure you are very comfortable with your core maths and physics content, and that your mathematical fundamentals are strong.
How difficult were the technical questions compared with A-level questions?

It won't be extremely difficult, especially given the short, non-calculator format, but it also won't necessarily feel like a standard A-level question. Expect some questions to have a slight twist where you need to step back, recognise a pattern, and reframe the problem.
How much did the interviewers help you?

You may be given some time to work through a problem yourself. If you struggle, the interviewer may give you hints or help you to identify a pattern and a way forward. Don't interpret needing help as automatically meaning you have done badly.

What is the ESAT score cut off to get an EEE interview?
Having a "good" interview is subjective. I messed up one question and felt like I'd messed up the whole interview, but we tend to catastrophise things. Prepare diligently, do your best, and remember that you can only control the input (your preparation), but not the final output.
Make sure to stay composed no matter what. If you get stuck, don't immediately assume you've failed. Talk through what you know, identify what you're unsure about, and try a simpler approach. Avoid panicking: it snowballs into rushed calculations, making more mistakes and not displaying your full potential.
There is no clear cut off of ESAT score for EEE interview, you can see the distribution below that every range of ESAT scores get interviewed, but chances are higher with applicants with ESAT score of 5 or higher.
